wrap it up [april]

Okay, it’s time to wrap up the end of April. It absolutely flew by, and as hard as I tried to keep up with the blog I just had far too much on to cope with. I think I’ve come to terms with not being able to keep up with weekly wrap ups and from now on I’m going to do a monthly wrap with maybe a small ‘what’s happening irl’ post a week.

I’ve hardly cooked anything this month, but I have tried a ton of new things! My body has been a little more open to moving out of my usual food routine, so I’ve been making the most of it.

As I spent a lot of the month away, I also got to eat a lot of good bread. Why does everywhere else in Europe have superior skills in bread-making?

VeganLove – It was so good that we visited twice, I almost went back a third time, and honestly it was a mistake that I didn’t. I ended up getting ill from the place I chose to go to.

Pizza Me – Cheap and cheerful. We also went here twice, it’s pizza by the slice and the vegan one was divine. I added a little extra chilli oil. There’s no vegan cheese, however, I’m not really a fan of most vegan cheeses so for me, that was a bonus!

Magnums – I had never been more grateful to see a magnum than on Margaret Island.

The Stable – We went here on a whim as I’d heard that they had a vegan pizza. They actually had four to choose from and offered to veganise any of their other options. I can’t remember the name of the pizza I went for, but it was superb. The base was light and crispy and tasted fantastic. The only thing I’d have liked was to have been able to add additional toppings; for me no pizza is complete without a healthy serving of jalapenos.  I’m definitely going to go back for a date night with Matt.

Vegan Chocolate Cake – Imagine, a store-bought vegan cake. I want to consume like ten of these.

Swedish Glace Vanilla Sticks – These were kind of disappointing after the magnums. They’re super small and the chocolate would be better suited to a choc ice. They’re definitely not worth £3.50 for 5. Just get the tub and add your own chocolate.

Okay, so I finished April in the midst of a couple of books, but with no real interest in reading them. So, I’m going to fill you in on what I’m reading at the moment.

I started reading Chronicles the day I bought it from the British Heart Foundation because I was so damn excited about it! Anyone who knows me by now understands that if I’m going to buy a book it has to earn its place on the shelf before I’ll read it. This is kinda so I don’t feel guilty about the purchase and also because I love how my shelves look and watching them change. It’s like an extra art piece.

Moving on though, my real enthusiasm stemmed from being tired of reading contemporary books. I feel like I’m getting NetGalley burnout even though I’ve only read two books so far. I just needed to dip my toes back into the Middle Ages.

Anyway, the book is about the chroniclers of England which is a topic I’ve been meaning to delve into for a while. Some chroniclers have acquired an almost mystical presence in fiction and non-fiction alike. So, I wanted the hard facts. Given-Wilson tends to state that something is a ‘fact’ at least once per paragraph, sometimes twice or thrice. It’s super interesting though and I’ve got a word document with all of my favourite quotes as I can’t quite bring myself to use a highlighter in it.

I also started reading Cellini’s Autobiography because I didn’t want to get Chronicles wet in the bath.

Last month I set myself the task of finishing The Rise and Fall of Dinosaurs before I went to Paris, but I just couldn’t find the energy for it. In the end, I returned it. I can always go back to it if the mood takes me.

I also decided to remove Alan Turning from my shelf. I couldn’t see myself enjoying the rest of it. The last time I tried to pick it up I was skim reading and skipping pages, and it wasn’t enjoyable. So, I’m saying goodbye to it for now. Again, it’s always going to be stocked in a library should I have a sudden desire to read it.

Once I’ve finished Chronicles I’m going to effectively put my own books on hold until I’ve read through all my NetGalley titles with a release date of May or June. That should then bring me to a nice point where I can spend June downsizing my own shelves.

I didn’t get through as many books as I wanted to this month, but I have done a ton more than I usually would. May is fairly quiet until the last weekend when I’ve got Slam Dunk and three gigs, so hopefully I can pick up some momentum.

It’s been quite a mixed month in terms of reading quality, there’s been some reads that I hated (Arkham Asylum), unexpected loves (The Turn of the Screw) and absolute favourites (Mary Queen of Scots).

Avengers Endgame – Fuck this movie. I’m still not ready to talk about all the issues I have with it and we’re now almost halfway through May.

Someone Great – I needed something light to watch when my dog woke me up at 6am wanting to hang out. I really enjoyed it, and it was nice to see a focus on the lives of all three women and their friendship. Erin and Leah’s relationship was also brought to the forefront rather than being a small subplot.

I definitely watched more than this, but they were pretty much all re-watches. I saw The Winter Solider seven times in April. I think I might have a problem.

Grey/grey italic font that says goal review
  • Catch up with reviews: I managed to publish a few, but I still have a stack of notes to work through for others. I also have 10 more NetGalley books to read and review. Intense.
  • Read and return library books: I read 3 out of 4 and returned them all!
  • Reset my routine: Kind of. I wake up between 6:00 and 6:30 now, but I’m not exactly productive. I think over this month I’m going to try and make it 6:00 every day and try to either read or go swimming.
Grey/grey italic font that says looking forward

Reduce my NetGalley stack – I’d kind of like to clear it by the end of June, and in future instead of sending out a ton of requests I’ll be more selective. I had no idea that I’d be approved for almost all the books I requested.

Sort out my planner – I keep almost double booking myself so I should probably actually start using the planner I bought. I spent a ton of money getting a really nice one from paperchase and for the most part, it just sits under my bed.

Make some decisions – I need to figure out what sort of content I want on here. I quite like reviewing books, but I want to talk about them more and actually discuss their content. In reviews I feel like I’m limited to saying the bare minimum in fear of spoiling the read for someone else.

wrap it up [3]

Here I am, wrapping up the last week of March, and rounding off the whole month. There’s just too many posts that I want to write to justify splitting things up.

Another pretty good week of home-cooked meals. I am actually so good at cooking. I didn’t get around to baking the battenberg cake though because I’m lazy and the cupcakes lasted way longer than expected. Apparently I’m the only one in the house who enjoys the taste of marzipan.

Even better though were the places that I went to this weekend. As my mom was visiting for her birthday we went all out. I had so much good vegan junk food!

  • Hummingbird Bakery – I got the vegan vanilla because it was topped with sprinkles and I haven’t had sprinkles in years because they’re almost always coated in beeswax. This was the ideal treat during the intermission at 9 to 5! Also, on Friday’s if you say ‘Treat a Friend‘ you can get a second cupcake for free.
  • by Chloe. – A healthy take on fast food. We visited the branch in Covent Garden and thanks to google maps it took us three times as long as it should have to get there. It was a little overpriced at almost £15 for a meatball sub and fries, but it tasted so damn good!
  • The Diner – I love a good vegan hotdog and oh boy did they deliver. The menu isn’t just vegan, but the vegan menu is h u g e. I got a hot dog, cheezy chips and onion rings and I already can’t wait to take Matt on a date there to try out other items! We also had the nicest server known to man.

Antonia Fraser Mary Queen of Scots Cover

It’s not been a very progressive week for me. I’ve been slowly working my way through this across my commutes, and due to a few busy evenings and a packed weekend I haven’t had the chance to get through much.

Right now I’m on page 481 of 707 so hopefully I’ll have finished it by the end of the week. Saying that though, Fraser’s written style makes me want to only read histories written by her for the rest of time.

I really do love the the scathing take downs of inaccurate sources.

I’m definitely going to pick The Rise and Fall of Dinosaurs up next, which will be followed by Queens of the Conquest as ideally I want all my current library books to be returned next Friday before we go to Paris. That’s a good thousand pages of reading but I can definitely do it if I waste a little less time. Postcards from the Edge and Alan Turing will probably be put back on my shelf for the time being.

I realised that I left off Fateless in my earlier wrap up. I actually read it in the middle of the month before I went home to see my family.

Eleven books across the month is pretty good going considering the amount of breakdowns that March has contained. I’m gonna give myself a pat on the back.

Grey/grey italic font that says watching

Images soured from Wikipedia

LEGO Batman Movie – I watched this on Amazon Prime, or more accurately I watched about 70% before I fell asleep and forgot I’d started it until now. It was alright, definitely not the best LEGO movie, but I will finish it.

Get Out – In preparation for seeing Us I finally watched Get Out. I’d put it off as I’d seen the majority of the movie in snippets that I’d watched whilst working at a cinema (read: watched when I should have been doing other things). I’m not sure enjoyable is the way to describe the experience, but it was certainly a masterpiece within the horror genre.

Us – A different experience to Get Out, being far less obvious in its commentary. There were moments that felt a little off, and at times it felt a little too drawn out but that may have been because I’d been up since five that morning and went to a late show. Peele in undoubtedly talented and I’m stoked to see what he delivers next.

Grey/grey italic font that says goal review
  • Decrease my TBR: I mean I read a fair few books, but I did also buy a lot and take more out of the library than I can realistically handle.
  • Be more involved: I definitely read more blog posts, I tried to read a couple a day on my lunch break at work but I mostly just realised that I don’t follow enough people to have a constant feed of posts to read. So, feel free to shamelessly self promote your best posts in the comments!
  • Design some graphics: I did! They’re a million times better than the ones on my last monthly wrap up. I’m still not 100% there but for now, they’ll do.
Grey/grey italic font that says looking forward

Catch up with reviews – I need to stop starting a new book as soon as I finish one. I should take a hot minute to reflect and write up the review or analysis.

Read and return my library books – I’ve got tons of stuff to do from mid-April onward so I cannot have them around or I’m going to end up with a ton of fines.

Reset my routine – Right now I’m going to bed around 9 pm and waking up at 7:30 am. It’s not good for me and is the result of Matt having to get up at 5 for work and disturbing me so then I drift in and out of sleep. I need to get up at the same time as him, create a routine and reclaim the hours I’ve been losing out on. Only have two me hours a day is not enough, especially when I have to squeeze dinner into the small time frame.

i cannot stop acquiring books

I have a problem. Okay, perhaps not the worst problem, but it’s going to develop into a severe issue if I don’t get my act together.

In January, I set myself the task of downsizing my book collection at home to 50 by August. Currently, it’s continuously expanded despite getting rid of every book that I’ve read (except for Jaws; I love the cover too much).

I suppose we might as well dive into my latest additions…

Grey/grey italic font that says library books

I’ve reintroduced myself to the art of borrowing books. It’s definitely hindering my progress in downsizing because I have not yet learned the art of only taking out what I have time to read.

Where Am I Now?, Mara Wilson

I started reading the Sunday after my library visit and I read about 80% of it in one sitting. It reads as though Mara’s having a conversation with you. I can’t say that I’ve kept up with her since seeing her in Matilda, but it was a good read – although it feels strange to say that about someones life.

The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs, Steve Brusatte

I started reading this as soon as I got home, but I fell asleep around ten pages in. It definitely wasn’t boring, I’d just had a long day. I haven’t had a chance to pick it up again, but I’m excited to get back to it. It was written recently, and includes research from the past decade. It’s going to provide a wealth of new knowledge, consider me stoked!

Mary Queen of Scots, Antonia Fraser

Mary has always been a fascinating historical figure, but I’ve never really delved into her side of history; I’ve been consumed with Elizabeth. I had my eye on this book during my first visit, but I couldn’t justify bringing home the 700 page tome (okay, maybe it’s not a tome but I’ve been reading a lot of shorter books recently) when I already had a decent stack. I began reading it two days ago and I’m already almost 200 pages in – also the Medici family are wild I need to find some history books on them as they’ve been on my research list since I first encountered them.

Queens of the Conquest, Alison Weir

I picked this up on a whim. It was tucked away on a bottom shelf and effectively calling out to me by offering me the women who altered the course of English history between 1066 and 1167.

Having seen the alternative cover, I definitely think my library was cheated. It also shows this to be a series, which if this is good I’ll definitely be diving into.

Grey/grey italic font that says charity shop finds

We have a British Heart Foundation store in the centre of Kingston and it is a treasure trove for me. Every time I go in there I spend around £20 and come out with an armful of books on the Middle Ages, women throughout history, as well as literary criticisms and harder to find classics. I love it. Recently, I picked up the following:

  • The Amorous Antics of Old England, Nigel Cawthorne
  • A History of Women Vol I, Ed. Georges Duby, Michelle Perrot, Pauline Schmitt Pantel, Trans. Arthur Goldhammer
  • Leonardo DaVinci, Jean Paul Richter
  • The Marble Wilderness, Carolyn Springer
  • A Year in the Life of a Medieval Woman, Ann Baer
  • The Poems of Catullus, Catullus
  • Tacitus, Rhiannon Ash

I’ve already read the Amorous Antics of Old England, and whilst it was not what I expected it to be (Old England to me is definitely not as recent as the 19th century!) it was enjoyable and gave me a few points to research further. I’m not sold on the format of presentation, or the lack of referenced sources though.

Holy shit! Leonardo DaVinci was an exciting find! It was a short and sweet overview of his life as an artist. It didn’t have a publishing date or any information really. I’m gonna try and do some research to find out more about it as I can’t find any record of it online so far.

The copy of Catullus was a sweet sweet folio edition from the 1980s so there’s no HQ shots. You can find a similar copy here.

I could probably cut further purchases out by avoiding the temptation of going in, but I always seem to justify it as the money is going to charity and the books are getting a new lease of life.

Grey/grey italic font that says book swaps

Book Swaps are the best and London has a ton! Even if I’m not looking to pick anything up I’ll have a little browse to see if there’s anything that I might want to read in the future. Sometimes though, I can’t help myself.

I haven’t taken many routes with a shelf recently, but yesterday I was forced to take a detour due to heavy delays and stopped at Raynes Park. On a whim I picked up Witch Light by Susan Fletcher. It’s set in Scotland in 1692 and the premise is that a young girl has been imprisoned as a witch, but she is offered the chance to tell her story.

Last week I found Graham Greene’s Travels With My Aunt, and I also picked up two books on politics last week for Matt, when we flicked through one there was a £50 price in the front cover. I felt like a thief!

Grey/Purple divider with three wave-like bumps in the middle.

On a more positive downsizing note, I went back to my parent’s house last weekend and managed to gather up 90 books to donate to charity which is around a third of the amount that I had there. It was also a vast improvement as during my last declutter where I couldn’t part with them.

Now all my remaining books are housed in a giant box with a few neat stacks on top, and the space under the bunks is completely empty! It’s absolutely wild when just a year ago there was around 500 books under there with more in that massive box and on my shelves. Hopefully over the next year or two my collections can finally join up, but definitely not until after I’ve moved again.

Grey/Purple divider with three wave-like bumps in the middle.

Have you picked up anything exciting this week, or are you desperately trying to downsize your collection and have discovered a long forgotten gem?
